Our English courses are divided into three categories: Intensive, Transitional and Curriculum.
- Intensive English courses are for students who are new to the country and who have a composite ACCESS score of 2.7 or below. Students who are in Intensive classes have three periods of English a day.
- Transitional English courses are for students who have been in the country for more than two years and have a composite ACCESS score of 2.7 or below. Students who are in Transitional classes have two periods of English a day.
- Curriculum English courses are for students who have a composite ACCESS score of 2.8-4.8. These courses use the standard English curriculum that the rest of the school uses; however, it is slightly modified for the needs of ELLs with additional supports built in for vocabulary development. Students who are in the Curriculum classes have one period of English a day.
Science, Math and Social Science Sheltered Content Courses
Students who are enrolled in Intensive and Transitional classes also have sheltered content curriculum classes. Sheltered content classes are comprised of ELLs with a composite ACCESS score of 3.5 and below. While sheltered content classes teach the same curriculum as the rest of the science, social science and math courses, they are specifically designed for English language learners and are taught at a much slower pace
